Cancer. HIV. Diabetes. COVID-19. With each of these diseases, an array of images and associations spring to mind. The same is not true of antibiotic resistance. Millions of people are affected by antibiotic resistance every year. Many of those people suffer lasting consequences, and nearly 1.3 million people die.
GARDP is committed to telling the stories of people affected by antibiotic resistance. These stories compel us to take action now—before it’s too late.
“Close your eyes and think about the images of COVID. You know what COVID looks like. In the case of antimicrobial resistance, we still have the ultimate challenge that we do not see a face. And therefore, the threat and the drivers—everything that moves people toward actually doing something about a problem—are missing.”
– Marc Mendelson, member of the GARDP Scientific Advisory Committee and Professor of Infectious Diseases, University of Cape Town (UCT), South Africa
