Melanie Mackay joined GARDP in August 2018 as a Clinical Trial Manager.
Melanie started her career in 2001 as a Laboratory Scientist and Coordinator for a phase III Micronutrient Supplementation trial conducted by the Africa Centre for Health and Populations Studies in South Africa. Melanie was responsible for the setup and management of all laboratory aspects of the trial and performed molecular biology techniques for the identification of enteric pathogens with an interest in Cryptosporidium. Melanie then worked as a Project Coordinator and later as a Project Manager for a number of academic research organizations where she managed and monitored several investigator-initiated trials as well as multi-party/multi-site observational studies. She later worked as a Senior Clinical Monitoring Associate for an international CRO managing phase II and phase III clinical trials for pharmaceutical companies including Merck, Eli Lilly and AstraZeneca. Melanie has experience in the disease areas of STI/HIV treatment and prevention, Autoimmune Diseases and Diabetes Mellitus. She holds a Master of Science degree in Medical Microbiology which she obtained from the Nelson R. Mandela School of Medicine, University of KwaZulu-Natal in 2000.
Melanie will help the GARDP program team with the planning and conduct of clinical activities in South Africa, in particular, the zoliflodacin phase 3 trial and the Polymyxin B PK study.
