Die Lagerbestände an Antibiotika schrumpfen in vielen Ländern dramatisch, dazu kommt ein weiteres Problem: Viel zu oft wirken die Medikamente nicht mehr.

Im österreichischen Kundl steht eine der weltweit grössten Produktionsstätten für Antibiotika, und doch können die Mitarbeiter die riesige Nachfrage nicht decken. Der Besitzer des Werks, der zurzeit noch vom Basler Pharmakonzern Novartis kontrollierte Generikahersteller Sandoz, spricht von einer «einzigartig schwierigen Situation». Auslöser dafür sei eine ganze Reihe von Faktoren: die Auswirkungen der Pandemie und, damit verbunden, ein Hochschnellen der Nachfrage, Engpässe bei den weltweiten Produktionskapazitäten, die Rohstoffknappheit sowie die derzeitige Energiekrise.
