GARDP announces Dr Mercedes Tatay as new Board member

3 December 2019

The Global Antibiotic Research and Development Partnership (GARDP) is pleased to announce that Dr Mercedes Tatay has joined the Board.
As a specialist in infectious diseases with a remarkable track record working with Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) on humanitarian medical responses and public health interventions, Dr Tatay brings exceptional experience in ensuring treatments are developed for and reach vulnerable populations.

Dr Tatay is the International Medical Secretary for MSF – responsible for the overall medical operational portfolio in more than 70 countries – a role she has held since 2016. She draws from her background working across global health issues and extensive experience in research and development, including as chair of the MSF Access Campaign Steering Committee, lead on the MSF research and development dossier and overseeing the Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative partnership.

Prior to her role with MSF, Dr Tatay worked with the World Health Organization to address the Ebola outbreak in Western Africa. Having practiced for many years in hospital settings, Dr Tatay’s background bridges preclinical research with the reality of the patients’ needs in daily clinical practice.

“I am fully committed to contributing to the collective leadership and responsibility taken by the Board to give strong political vision and strategic orientation to GARDP,” said Dr Tatay. “With the Board I will work to ensure the organization delivers on the most needed public health driven and patient oriented research and development in the field of anti-microbial resistance.”

Dr Tatay was selected to serve a three-year term during the GARDP Board meeting on 18 November. She replaces outgoing member Dr Joanne Liu, who served on the Board since 2016.
