Life-saving treatment for neonatal sepsis

A safe dose of fosfomycin, can be used to treat babies with neonatal sepsis, a paper published in Archives of Diseases in Childhood reports. Fosfomycin is an antibiotic used to treat serious bacterial infections, but has rarely been used for infants admitted to hospitals. The finding is significant, as there are very few antibiotics specifically licensed to treat multidrug-resistant infections in neonates.
“This is a very encouraging outcome for the treatment of neonatal sepsis and the care of babies who are hardest hit by rising antimicrobial resistance (AMR),” said Borna Nyaoke from the Global Antibiotic Research and Development Partnership, Nairobi, Kenya .
