Who we are.
GARDP is a not-for-profit global health organization driven to protect people from the rise and spread of drug-resistant infections.
Through public-private partnerships, GARDP develops and makes accessible much-needed antibiotic treatments. We embed affordability, appropriate use and sustainability for high-burden countries and populations into R&D licensing so that new treatments reach the people who need them most.
What makes GARDP unique.
GARDP is reshaping the traditional antibiotic R&D model by putting public health impact, affordability and the needs of high-burden countries first – ensuring that the antibiotic treatments the world most urgently requires are developed and made available to people. Our clinical development efforts are focused on high-burden countries and vulnerable populations, such as newborns, with access considerations integrated at every stage of the R&D process. This will help build a portfolio of treatments across key disease areas that meet global public health needs.
GARDP’s public-private partnership model takes a three-pronged approach to product development and access.
- By integrating R&D and access, we are able to factor sustainable access into every stage of antibiotic development, from scientific discovery and R&D, right through to the manufacturing, registration, and commercialization of antibiotics.
- Our collaboration and license agreements also help to de-risk antibiotic development, which in turn secures us the rights to make the treatments available in high-burden regions that would otherwise be left behind.
- Finally, we work through equal partnerships, bringing together public and private sector partners from the outset to combine expertise, resources and global reach to tackle antimicrobial resistance.

GARDP’s history.
In 2015, at a time when drug resistance was accelerating, and yet pharmaceutical companies were walking away from antibiotic development, the World Health Assembly adopted the Global Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance to address this deepening crisis.
One year later, GARDP was created by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative (DNDi) to help turn that plan into action. After being incubated within DNDi, GARDP became an independent Swiss foundation in 2018.
Our vision.
A world where all infections are treatable for everyone, everywhere.
Our mission.
We accelerate the development and access to treatments for drug-resistant bacterial infections.

Our impact.
The challenges GARDP was created to address still remain acute. Most pharmaceutical companies have exited antibiotic R&D, the global antibiotics pipeline continues to shrink, and the majority of new antibiotics are available only to a fraction of the world, leaving populations in low- and middle-income countries without access to life-saving treatments. Children also remain largely excluded from antibiotic development, while industry-led research often fails to align with the greatest public health priorities.
GARDP’s model – rooted in public health needs – offers a sustainable, long-term solution. By integrating affordability, appropriate use, and suitability for low-resource settings into every stage of antibiotic development, GARDP ensures that new treatments for priority pathogens can reach the people who need them most. Through collaboration and licensing agreements that enable manufacturing, registration and distribution in LMICs, GARDP actively works to close the decade-long gap between antibiotic approval in high-income markets and access in LMICs.
The performance indicators linked to GARDP’s Theory of Change formalize the organization’s efforts to bolster organizational and financial sustainability. Mission-level indicators track the performance of our discovery, clinical development, and access portfolios, the timeliness of regulatory approvals, and the real-world influence of GARDP-generated evidence on treatment guidelines. Organizational key performance indicators also help ensure that we can continue to operate efficiently as we scale.

Our partners
Both in high-income countries and LMICs, our partners, including scientists, clinicians, industry, manufacturers, governments, donors and civil society, help to implement GARDP’s efforts and maximize impact.
Our funders
The champions of our innovative public health-driven approach are our funders. Their support enables us to develop antibiotic treatments to protect people from the rise and spread of antimicrobial resistance.
GARDP’s global network
Our global network allows us to unlock the expertise of different countries and help address the AMR burden where it is most needed. The network of partners and offices in strategic locations strengthens our geographic footprint and helps optimize resources.
