GARDP Africa.

GARDP Africa is a not-for-profit organization based in South Africa that was registered in 2018 with the support of GARDP and DNDi. As a member of the GARDP network, we fully support GARDP’s mission.
We collaborate with a broad range of partners in Africa, from researchers and governments to hospitals and civil society, supporting GARDP to implement clinical trials and studies, as well as improving access to antibiotic treatments.

Africa bears a high AMR burden.
Drug-resistant infections are one of the biggest threats to public health globally, but Africa bears a disproportionate burden. The lack of access to quality-assured essential and effective antibiotics is one of the main drivers of AMR in Africa.

Strengthening antibiotic innovation and access across Africa.
With a dedicated GARDP Africa team based primarily in South Africa and additional staff hosted by DNDi Eastern Africa in Kenya, GARDP is broadening its footprint across the continent, working with ministries of health, local experts, and research institutions to drive antibiotic innovation from discovery and research to access. For instance, hospitals in Kenya, South Africa and Ghana are contributing to GARDP’s global trial aimed at better treatments for neonatal sepsis.
Also, more than half the participants in the phase 3 clinical trial of zoliflodacin, a first-in-class oral antibiotic for drug-resistant gonorrhoea, were from South Africa, underscoring Africa’s central role in shaping global solutions.
